Respect for each other in a polarized community
We live today in a highly polarized world and within highly polarized churches. In this, we are not unique. A certain degree of polarization exists within every community and is normal and healthy.

The Vatican and the Lefebvrists: Not a negotiation
Prior to the opening of formal conversations between officials of the Holy See and leaders of the Lefebvrist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), which began on Oct. 26, the mainstream media frequently misrepresented these discussions as a negotiation aimed at achieving a compromise that both sides can live with.

Ministerial religious life
My traditional Thanksgiving column this year is devoted, in thanksgiving, to one of the Catholic Church's greatest assets, namely, the extraordinary contributions over so many years of religious women to the Church's missionary, ministerial, and spiritual life.

Where are the grown-ups?
Even though Mayor Michael Bloomberg broke records for campaign spending, New York City's richest citizen was elected to a third term by a surprisingly small margin.

Norwegian sanctimony, global folly
The Norwegian Nobel Committee looked in the mirror, saw the president of the United States, and awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama. One is tempted to vary Rainer Maria Rilke ("Love consists in this, that two solitudes protect and touch and greet each other") and suggest that this was the meeting of two narcissisms.

Ministerial religious life
Author Sandra Schneiders is a member of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Monroe, Michigan, and is professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California.
