I. Why these Directions in Evangelization?
The first task of the Church is to preach the Gospel to all nations. In
Evangelii Nuntiandi Pope Paul VI described evangelization as the “deepest identity” of the Church, which “exists in order to evangelize” (EN, 14). While proposing a broad and inclusive concept, Paul VI made it clear that there can be no evangelization without proclamation of Jesus as Lord (EN, 22).

How often have we heard — whether by way of hope or by way of boast — that Los Angeles is the city of the 21st Century. There is so much that gives foundation to that claim, the city stands massive before us in its energy!
