Just about everyone agrees, even atheists, that Jesus Christ existed as a human person. He was a gifted teacher. He had special powers. He amassed a large following that caught the attention of both religious and secular authorities.

The word “heir” conjures images of wealth, privilege and, most of all I think, leisure. We use the word to describe people who stand to inherit vast sums of money, and therefore don’t have to bother with tedious responsibilities like work.

What do you think of when you imagine Jesus? Do you imagine the baby in the manger, surrounded by joyful parents, angels and shepherds? Do you picture him as depicted in millions of simulated photographs distributed throughout the world — a de-ethnicized, white-ish male with flowing brown hair and slight beard?

“Joy,” C.S. Lewis wrote in one of his books, “is the serious business of heaven.” If this is true (and I think it is), you would hardly know it from the public debate about faith, politics and policy. I mean, the anger and outrage on all sides, including from those claiming to be spokespeople for the Christian faith, is constant and loud.
