A house of prayer for all nations?
Friday, 05 August 2011 08:59
Today’s first reading shares a powerful vision of what God wants our spiritual communities to be: “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
I’m not sure we’re there yet. There are worshippers of God, Catholic and otherwise, in virtually every nation and race in the world, But they, or we, are not yet united in a single home. We tend to want to separate into groups that are identified more by our differences in beliefs. Are we all part of one global “house of prayer for all nations?” I don’t think so.

The tiny whispers in our lives

We have witnessed several major disasters in recent years — an earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, massive earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, flooding on the Mississippi River, tornadoes in the southeastern United States, wildfires in Arizona.

Tending our own inner gardens

I’ve never been a very good gardener. Each year, I plant some tomatoes. I dutifully turn over the soil and place stakes, mark each variety I’ve planted, and by the time the fruit is ready the garden is overgrown with weeds and the tomatoes are scrawny and in disarray.
Maybe I’m an OK gardener, but a bad weeder. I do know the basics of soil preparation, placement in sunlight and watering schedule. Still, the end result is discouraging.

One of the most familiar things we Catholics do is make the sign of the cross in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We do it at Mass. We do it when we say grace at the table. Many of us also do it when we are particularly scared, or moved, by a dramatic event.
A Graced Moment: Welcoming the New Roman Missal

“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter…. A faithful friend is beyond price.” These words from the Book of Sirach (6:15-16) resonate with all who know the joy of friendship. A good friend is someone I know well, someone who knows me well. A faithful friend is a trusted companion who enriches my life, as I do for my friend.Member Login
