The pallium: ‘A sign of the Good Shepherd’
There is, of course, Archbishop José Gomez, who was installed earlier this year as archbishop of Los Angeles, and received his second pallium as a sign of his communion with the pope and his pastoral responsibility as a shepherd of God’s people. Archbishop Gomez received a pallium in 2006, when he was archbishop of San Antonio.
His successor as leader of San Antonio, Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, was educated at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo and ordained as a Missionary of the Holy Spirit priest in 1984. Among his seminary classmates in attendance for the June 29 ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica was Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Alexander Salazar.
On June 30, pilgrims, friends and family members of the new archbishops joined them in a special audience with Pope Benedict XVI in the Paul VI hall. On these pages, The Tidings presents some of the highlights of the events.
