Acting school aims to make Hollywood more like Holywood

Years before he was known as Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla hoped to become an actor.

The late pontiff studied drama in his native Poland at Krakow's Jagiellonian University. Later, while preparing for the priesthood at a clandestine seminary, he also was a member of the underground Rhapsodic theater company.

Noon at Kenneth Hahn Regional Park off south La Cienega Boulevard, and Vireyma Aparicio was still wearing the lime-green frilly skirt and eye-catching blouse with the big butterfly across the front. It was the outfit she donned to perform an energetic dance version of Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” with other fourth-graders from St. Vincent School in St. Mary’s Academy’s gym earlier July 15.

Archdiocese welcomes 48 new deacons from Santa Barbara Region parishes.

The largest clerical ordination in the nine-year history of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels took place July 16 as 48 men from 24 Santa Barbara Region parishes were ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon by Archbishop José Gomez.

Girl Scouts’ Gold Award projects enhance Guadalupe Center

With their combined athletic and performing talents, Lydia Edwards and Samantha Labrecque could have done their Girl Scout Gold Award projects anywhere in their San Fernando Valley community.

But the teenagers both chose to carry out their projects for Girl Scouts’ highest award at Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., assisting low-income families and refugees with services including emergency food and clothing, English classes, job training and placement, after-school tutoring and sports/recreational activities.
