Bringing together many diverse elements (and age groups) of the local Catholic community, the seventh annual Los Angeles Catholic Prayer Breakfast will be held Sept. 20 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.The event was launched after several Los Angeles area Catholic business leaders had attended the annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2005, and wondered about the potential for doing something similar in Los Angeles.

When people ask John Garvey — who just finished his first year as president of Catholic University of America — why it’s important for a person of faith to be teaching organic chemistry, he has a ready reply:“My answer is that, ‘You have the wrong idea of your vocation as a teacher if you think that the only thing that you’re doing is teaching the periodic table. You need to concern yourself with the formation of your students as people, both inside and outside the classroom, every bit as much as you do with the formation of their intellect.’”

It used to be that St. Thomas the Apostle students had to go to the school’s basement to read the few books the institution carried. No more.On June 10 a brand new library featuring $10,000 worth of books was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, to the joy of the whole K-8 school community celebrating its first year in a state-of-the-art building at 15th Street and Normandie Avenue.
