Sr. Colette McManus, RSHM
Funeral Mass was celebrated March 2 at Sacred Heart Chapel, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Sister Colette McManus, 88, who died Feb. 24 at Regina Residence in Orange.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, one of 10 children, she made her novitiate in Ferrybank and did her undergraduate studies at Oxford University. She then came to Tarrytown, N.Y., and received a Bachelor’s in English from Marymount College and an Master’s from Fordham University.
A born educator, she spent the next 45 years in secondary teaching or administration at Marymount Schools in New York, Bogota, Barcelona, Paris, and then 18 years as principal of Marymount High School in Los Angeles from 1972-1991. She inspired a love of learning in her students and challenged them to be critical thinkers, women committed to service and justice, and to developing their full potential.
Fluent in French and Spanish, she spent some time during her active retirement years at the congregation’s motherhouse in Béziers, France, working on the RSHM charism and Sources. She died on the Feast of the Founding of the RSHM Institute.
Survivors include her sisters, Sheila and Fran (Mike). Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City.
Sr. Beatrice Hoberg, SP
Funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at Church in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, for Sister of Providence Beatrice Hoberg, 95, who died March 3.
Born in Chicago, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1937. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister Hoberg taught music for 40 years in schools in Illinois, Indiana and California. During these years, she co-authored a classroom music series, “To God Through Music,” published by Gregorian Institute of America in 1955.
Locally, she taught at St. Euphrasia, Granada Hills (1973-74); Marywood Music Center, Orange (1974-79); and was on staff at the Diocesan Retreat Center, Orange (1979-80).
After her retirement to the Motherhouse in Indiana, she co-authored “The Story of Anne Théresè,” a biography of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin for children which was put in coloring book form and is still in circulation. Burial was in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
