THOUSAND OAKS --- The La Reina High School Mock Trial Team won the 2011 world championship at the Empire City Mock Trial Invitational Tournament in New York City Oct. 23.
The La Reina mock trial team won trials against teams from Georgia, Ireland, Oregon and California. The tournament included 16 state champions, six international teams and 34 at-large teams. The final match, scored by a panel of 13 judges, found the La Reina plaintiff team competing against the defense team from Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania.
Team members included seniors Olivia Polk and Hannah Young; juniors Hannah Delsohn, Elizabeth Hribal, Lena Melillo and Rachel Warner; sophomores Olivia Aulicino, Ryanne Bamieh, Camila Hamideh and Nisha Srinivasa; and freshmen Leila Flanagan and Reilly Jones. The team is coached by Liz Harlacher.
Since 1990, La Reina’s Mock Trial has won two state championships (2008 and 2011) and 16 Ventura County titles. The team placed 15th at the national championship in May.
St. John’s hosts lecture on theology and extraterrestrial life
CAMARILLO --- “Christian Theology and Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life” is the subject of a lecture and discussion to be presented at the 16th annual Reverend Newman C. Eberhardt, CM, Lecture on Nov. 8 at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo.
The 7 p.m. lecture will be given by Dominican Father Thomas O’Meara, PhD and professor emeritus of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Among his recent publications are: “God in the World: A Guide to Karl Rahner’s Theology” (2007), “A Theologian’s Journey” (2002), “Theology of Ministry” (1999), and “Thomas Aquinas, Theologian” (1997).

St. Francis de Sales holds annual All Souls Day Concert
SHERMAN OAKS --- The St. Francis de Sales Choir and Wagner Ensemble will present its seventh annual All Souls Day Concert Nov. 5, 7 p.m., at the church. Under the direction of Jeannine Wagner, the combined choirs will perform two major works: Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and Cantata Misericordium by Benjamin Britten, accompanied by orchestra and organist Steve Park. A reception follows the performance.
Tickets are $15. In commemoration of All Souls Day, people donating $50 or more will receive admission for four as well as the opportunity to have two loved ones’ names recited and printed in the program. All Souls Evening Prayer and concert set at Cathedral
LOS ANGELES --- The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will celebrate All Souls Nov. 13 with Evening Prayer and a concert featuring Andrew Wright’s “A Requiem of Peace,” conducted by Frank Brownstead and performed by the Cathedral Choir and Samuel Soria, Cathedral organist.
“November is the month we commemorate the faithfully departed of the Church,” said Brownstead, Cathedral director of music, noting that “A Requiem of Peace, a seven-movement Requiem Mass sung in Latin, “is composed for choir, soloists, and organ and showcases lush, modern harmonies.”
An award-winning composer, Wright is currently diocesan director of liturgical music at Brentwood Cathedral Essex in the United Kingdom.
Evening Prayer will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the concert. The choir will also sing in the mausoleum while family and friends visit their loved ones.
