New Maryvale Center: A dream further realized in Duarte

Written by By Sr. Nancy Munro, CSJ Tuesday, 12 July 2011 14:19

“We need to stand up for parents and families in our day,” he said, referring to his column in the July 8 issue of The Tidings that addressed the needs of children and their families, especially in the San Gabriel Region.

The new Maryvale Center in Duarte will do just that as it provides licensed child care in an area where nearly all of the parents coming to Maryvale have annual incomes well below the federal poverty level. A number of other programs at the newer center will now be available to more than twice as many children and their families.

The Daughters of Charity were invited to El Pueblo de los Angeles by Bishop Thaddeus Amat, who asked them to open an orphanage and care for a fast growing number of orphans and homeless children. Since then, they have steadfastly adhered to their Vincentian mission of “assisting the poor in every way.”

Papal intentions for June: That a culture of dialogue, listening, and mutual respect may prevail among peoples; That where secularization is strongest, Christian communities may effectively promote a new evangelization.
