Catholic Education Foundation receives $11.3 million gift

Written by Mike Nelson Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:04

This gift will provide for at least 600 tuition awards every year to financially deserving students attending Catholic schools in the poorest neighborhoods throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

“My great-uncle Frank believed in the importance of an excellent education for every child,” said Victoria Seaver Dean. “He recognized that there is a particular potential in every child that only a values-based education can cultivate.”

That, she said, is why he wanted his legacy to go to children who want to attend Catholic schools but do not have the resources. “Children,” Frank Seaver once noted, “are the future of our country and we must provide an education that allows them to use their talents to become industrious and responsible citizens.”

Frank and Blanche Seaver (who died in 1964 and 1994, respectively) were well-known local philanthropists who made significant commitments during their lifetime to education in Southern California. Their contributions are reflected in buildings with the family name at Pomona College, Loyola Marymount University, Pilgrim School, and Pepperdine University, among others.

Although they had no children of their own, their legacy will live on in CEF students, said Cardinal Roger Mahony, founding chairman of the CEF, who received the gift on its behalf. Although Frank Seaver was not a Catholic, he supported the Catholic schools because, in his mind, they welcomed all children in ways that other schools could not.

“Frank Seaver understood that teaching faith, morals and values would prepare children to make a difference in their lives and particularly to our country,” said Cardinal Mahony.
