More people around world face restrictions on religion

Close to one-third of the world's citizens have faced increased restrictions on religious practice and expression imposed on them by their respective nations' governments, according to a study issued Aug. 9 by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Public Life.

LCWR assembly: A meeting of ‘contemplative activists’

The vice president of the Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa, is the new president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, and a Sister of St. Francis of Assisi from Wisconsin was chosen as president-elect at the closing of the organization's Aug. 9-12 annual assembly in Garden Grove, where members described themselves as "contemplative activists."

S.F. official proposes regulating crisis pregnancy centers

A San Francisco supervisor introduced legislation Aug. 2 aimed at stopping pro-life medical clinics from using "misleading advertising" in billboards and in pay-per-click Google ads that implies they offer abortion or abortion referrals.

The legislation is part of a campaign by NARAL Pro-Choice America to require crisis pregnancy centers to state up front that they do not provide abortions. The U.S. District Court ruled in January that Baltimore's ordinance violated pregnancy centers' right to free speech and the city of Baltimore has appealed.

Contraceptives, health insurance and religious exemptions

In more than half of the states, Catholic officials have been living for years with mandates that health insurance plans must cover FDA-approved contraceptives in their prescription drug plans.

CRS provides emergency relief to drought-plagued East Africa

Five decades of experience in East Africa has helped Catholic Relief Services respond to the region’s growing drought crisis, affecting the countries of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea and South Sudan.

Currently, CRS is providing emergency relief in this area known as the “Horn of Africa,” which is experiencing one of its worst droughts in 60 years.
