At age 50, St. John Fisher Church engages its 3,200 families in numerous outreach ministries.It is 5 p.m. the first Wednesday of June, and Kent Buechs, his wife Stella and their 17-year-old daughter Monika are moving quickly in a small kitchen featuring commercial appliances. One parent checks if the water in two big pans is already boiling; the other opens cartons of sour cream, bags of pasta and ground beef; and the young girl takes care of the sweet corn. Beef stroganoff over pasta with sweet corn on the side is the dish of the day, plus a bun and a chocolate chip cookie.

Cardinal Roger Mahony, a graduate of St. John’s Seminary College and ordained to the priesthood from St. John’s Seminary in 1962, will be among five men honored at the fourth annual Distinguished Alumni Dinner Sept. 25 at the Camarillo institution.
