  • Sister Alphonsus Egan, SSL

    Sister Alphonsus Egan, a Sister of St. Louis for 75 years, died on November 13, 2015.  She was born in 1919 in Kilkelly, County Mayo, Ireland.  Sister Alphonsus entered religious life in 1940.  She was an elementary teacher both in Ireland and California, including Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach; St. Bede, La Canada; Nativity, El Monte; St. Joseph, Long Beach; and St. Louis of France, La Puente. 

    Sister Alphonsus also served as principal at St. Louis of France, La Puente and St. Robert’s, Sacramento.  She is mourned by the Sisters of St. Louis, Associates, her nephews and family in Ireland and friends.  She was lovingly cared for at Marycrest Manor, Culver City; and in more recent years at Mary Health of the Sick in Newbury Park where she died.  Sister Alphonsus has been buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

  • Community mourns loss of beloved priest

    Msgr. John Arnold Mihan, the educational leader who served Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for decades, died Dec. 26. He was 83.

    Msgr. Mihan was the son of Arnold and Virginia (O’Reilly) Mihan. Raised in Los Angeles, he found his calling to be a priest while attending St. Brendan School and being an altar boy to Cardinal James Francis McIntrye.  

  • Sister Mary Angela Gawlik, CSSF

    Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 19 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent Chapel in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, for Felician Sister Mary Angela Gawlik, who died Aug. 15; she was 82 years old. The Mass was followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  • Sister Helene McBride, PBVM

    Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 10 at the Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco for Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sister Helene McBride, who died Aug. 31; she was 84. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, California.

  • Fr. Thomas Mullen, SSCC

    A Mass of Resurrection was held July 23 at Holy Name of Mary Church, San Dimas, for Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Father Thomas Mullen, who died July 15; he was 64. Funeral Mass was celebrated the following day in Ardee, County Louth, Ireland.

  • Sister Angela Pacheco, CSJ

    Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 9 at the Carondelet Center in Los Angeles for St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Angela Pacheco, who died Sept. 6 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles; she was 77. The graveside service was held the following day at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

  • Msgr. Roland George Zimmerman

    Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 9 at Annunciation Church, Monrovia, for Msgr. Roland George Zimmerman, who died Aug. 26 at the age of 88. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.      

  • Joseph Hindley, former Together in Mission director, dies at 74

    Joseph Clarence Hindley was a devout Catholic, a life-long Californian, a dedicated teacher and former director of Together in Mission for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Prayer is seeking the face of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church recalls the story of how St. John Vianney once found a peasant praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The saint asked him what he was doing, and the man replied: “I look at him and he looks at me.”
