Remembering a friend

By Matthew Ajello
text only version

On May 12, St. John Bosco High School hosted its annual "Marian Day." This day is usually a celebration, with a morning Mass and athletic competitions (a basketball tournament, student vs. faculty softball game, and more).

However, this year's Marian Day became a day to honor and mourn our late Bosco brother, Patrick Romey.

On the morning of May 9, Patrick --- a well liked, beloved and positive 17-year-old senior who would have graduated this month from Bosco --- was killed, along with his mother Lucilla and father Maynardo, in a fatal car accident in Hacienda Heights. This tragic event saddened everyone, from Patrick's close friends to minor acquaintances.

A graduate of Our Lady of Fatima School and parishioner of Holy Family Church in Artesia, Patrick was well known for his optimistic attitude and a trademark smile, which everyone could recognize. The school week following his death was filled with memories and tales about Patrick. Everyone had a good memory of him; he was that kind of guy.

Auxiliary Bishop Alex Salazar presided at the morning Mass, attended by the entire student body and members of Patrick's family. The bishop offered an inspiring homily on the meaning of life --- life on this earth and life which is eternal --- and expressed his condolences and those of Cardinal Roger Mahony. Some of Patrick's closest friends participated in the opening procession with lit candles and t-shirts which read "Romey '09."

And Patrick's older brother Paul spoke at the end of the Mass. He noted that he tried to encourage Patrick to attend a public high school, rather than Bosco. But now, he said, after having experienced the closeness and the love present among the family of St. John Bosco High School, "I know that Patrick came to the right place."

After Mass, athletic competition began. All of the tournaments were dedicated to Patrick, who loved basketball as much as anyone ever could. There are three basketball courts at St. John Bosco; the middle court was a common hangout for Patrick during school hours. During break and lunch, he was seen playing basketball and laughing with friends almost every day of the week.

Bosco's seniors are circulating a petition for the middle court to be painted blue and gold (our school colors), and to have "Romey" painted onto it. That court is now referred to as "Patrick's court."

Patrick made an impact on everyone he came into contact with. His death is a tragedy, and we all miss him dearly. He was loved by all, and I am grateful to have been a friend of his.

Rest in peace, Patrick Romey.

Matthew Ajello is a senior at St. John Bosco High School, Bellflower. A memorial Mass for the Romey family was celebrated May 19 at the school. A funeral Mass for the Romey family will be celebrated May 28, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Artesia. A memorial fund in Patrick's name is being established at St. John Bosco; for information, call (562) 920-1734.
