Fr. Patrick Hughes, Irwindale pastor emeritus, dies at 80

text only version

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated April 25, 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Irwindale for Father Patrick Michael Hughes, 80, pastor emeritus of the parish, who died Easter Sunday following a long illness.

Funeral services took place April 21 at Holy Cross Cemetery's Risen Christ Chapel in Culver City.

A Los Angeles native, and younger brother of Msgr. John Hughes (pastor emeritus of St. Mary Magdalen, Camarillo), Father Hughes attended St. Paul the Apostle School, Loyola High School, Los Angeles College and St. John's Seminary before being ordained a priest on April 24, 1956.

He served as an associate pastor at several parishes including St. Joseph, Long Beach; St. Hilary, Pico Rivera; and Our Lady of Loretto, Los Angeles, before becoming administrator of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1977. He was named pastor of the parish in 1979, ministering until retirement in 1999.

"He was a very well-liked, gentle and kind priest who was very open to people," said his good friend and fellow retired priest Father Gerald B. Walker.

Living in retirement in Orange County, he served as needed at area churches, including St. Nicholas in Laguna Woods (which will have a memorial service for Father Hughes on April 23, 9 a.m.) and St. Kilian's in Mission Viejo (holding a memorial service April 24, 9 a.m.).
