Profiling the priesthood class of 1959

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the golden jubilarian priests of 2009 include several who were ordained in Ireland and assigned to Southern California, as well as those ordained from St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, and one ordained in England. Following are brief summaries of their service.

Father Francis Cassidy: A native of County Clare, Ireland, Father Cassidy was ordained at All Hallows Seminary, Dublin. His assignments have included associate pastorates at numerous parishes, and he was part of the team ministry at Immaculate Conception, Monrovia, where he is now living.

Father John Daly: Born in County Louth, he served in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn in Australia, then came to Los Angeles in 1977. He was pastor at Beatitudes of Our Lord, La Mirada; St. Philip the Apostle, Pasadena; and St. Louis of France, La Puente; and Holy Trinity, L.A., where he is pastor emeritus.

Msgr. Sean Flanagan: Born in Dublin, and ordained at St. Kieran College, Kilkenny, he is pastor emeritus of St. Bartholomew, Long Beach, where he was pastor for four years. He was previously pastor for 21 years at St. Catherine of Siena, Reseda, in addition to associate pastor duties.

Msgr. John Foley: A native of County Tipperary, and ordained from All Hallows Seminary, he is pastor emeritus of Holy Redeemer, Montrose, where he was pastor for four years and member of the team ministry of the parish for 13 years. One of 10 Irish priests who arrived in L.A. in 1959, his assignments included associate pastorates and Newman ministry at Long Beach City College.

Msgr. Michael Killeen: A native of County Clare, he was ordained with St. John's Seminary class of 1959. Two brothers were also priests. After several associate pastorates, and serving as administrator at St. Martha, Valinda, in 1981 he was appointed founding pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rowland Heights and built the new church in 1990. He retired in 2006 as pastor emeritus.

Father Kevin Larkin: Born in County Cork, and ordained at St. Patrick's, Carlow, he served at parishes in Orange County and Los Angeles including Holy Family, Glendale; St. Philip Neri, Lynwood; St. Genevieve, Panorama City; St. Julie Billart, Newbury Park; St. Joseph, Long Beach, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Tujunga. Since 1981 he has been pastor at St. Francis de Sales, Sherman Oaks.

Msgr. John Mihan: A native Angeleno, he attended St. Brendan School and was ordained from St. John's. He received a doctorate in education from Catholic University of America in 1964 and was appointed assistant superintendent of elementary schools. From 1969 to 1989 Msgr. Mihan was superintendent and for five years served on the executive committee of the National Educational Association. He served as pastor of Corpus Christi, Pacific Palisades, for 12 years, retiring in 2003.

Msgr. William O'Keeffe: Born in Port Arlington, County Laos, Ireland, he was ordained at St. Patrick Seminary, Carlow. He served for 27 years as pastor at Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach, retiring in 2008. He also served as associate pastor at several parishes, as well as the Marriage Tribunal and Council of Priests. He had two priest brothers, Jeremiah and Kenneth.

Father Jeremiah O'Neill: A native of County Cork, he attended Mount Melleray Seminary, studied theology at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon, and was ordained from St. John's. After several associate pastor assignments, he was appointed pastor at St. Thomas More, Alhambra, in 1980 and served until retiring in 1999.

Father Thomas Peacha: Born in Los Angeles, he is a member of St. John's class of 1959. His associate pastor assignments include St. Vibiana Cathedral. In 1989 he was named administrator and then pastor of St. Cecilia, L.A., and in 1997 named to head Holy Trinity, L.A. He retired in 2005 and lives in Seal Beach.

Father Cornelius Phelan: A native of County Cork, he was ordained at St. Kieran. He retired in 2003 after serving as associate pastor for 44 years in the archdiocese. His assignments included St. Elizabeth, Altadena; Holy Redeemer, Montrose; Holy Angels, Arcadia; St. Bridget of Sweden, Van Nuys; St. Gregory Nazianzen, L.A.; St. Julie Billiart, Newbury Park; and St. Basil, L.A.

Father Alfonso Scott: Born in Los Angeles in 1933, he graduated from Loyola High School and was ordained from St. John's. He is the grandson of the famous lawyer, Joseph Scott, and nephew of Msgr. George Scott. Most of his service was in high school education at St. Monica, Santa Monica; St. Bernard, Playa del Rey; St. Anthony, Long Beach; and St. Joseph, Lakewood. He now lives at St. Cyprian, Long Beach.

Father Peter Tsang: Born in Shanghai, China, he attended the Salesian seminary there, studied philosophy in Hong Kong and was ordained in England. He taught in Hong Kong and in 1975 came to Los Angeles. In 1980 he was incardinated in the archdiocese and appointed administrator of St. Bridget Chinese Church, L.A. He has served at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rowland Heights, since 1991.

Msgr. Francis Weber: A native of Indiana, Msgr. Weber is a member of St. John's class of 1959. Nationally known as an outstanding historian and author, he is a member of noted historical groups and societies. He has edited or authored more than 140 volumes and over 100 miniature books. For 32 years Msgr. Weber wrote a weekly column for The Tidings. Since 1981 he has served as administrator at San Fernando Mission and is the archdiocesan archivist.

Father Thomas Weible: Born in Los Angeles, he attended Mount Carmel High School, served in the Army and worked for several companies locally. Ordained from St. John's in 1959, he joined the Maryknoll Fathers in 1962 and served in Bolivia, Peru and Chile. His associate pastor assignments include St. Catherine of Siena, Reseda, and San Buenaventura Mission. He is retired in Sun City, Arizona.
