Services held for Bill Fritzsche, former Tidings board president
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 9 at Corpus Christi Church, Pacific Palisades, for William B. Fritzsche, entrepreneur and former president of The Tidings' board of directors, who died April 6 at home with his family after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.
A graduate of Loyola High School (1948) and Loyola University (1952), Fritzsche was described, in a statement from the high school, as "an active and generous alum who will be long remembered for his incurable optimism, his warm and extroverted personality and his compassionate service to others. Bill was a world class gentleman, and Los Angeles will be a little colder without his beaming warm presence."
After graduation from Loyola U. (now Loyola Marymount), he served in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1952-54. He later founded several companies including Aqua-O Corp., serving as president from 1960-1996, and Monarch Lime Inc., serving as president 1980-1987. He also served as directors of several corporations, including The Tidings (publisher of The Tidings, Vida Nueva, Orange County Catholic and the L.A. and Orange diocesan directories) from 1998 to 2008.
Fritzsche received many awards for his outstanding achievements and community involvement, and was also involved in the leadership of many organizations and activities. Among them: Corpus Christi School Assn. and Parish Men's Club; LMU Alumni Fund (founder) and LMU Alumni Assn. (director); and St. John's Hospital Board of Directors (audit and finance committees).
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores; children William, James, Caroline, Elizabeth, Maria, Thomas and Vincent; many grandchildren. His sons and a brother, Henry, were also Loyola High alums. Condolences may be sent to Dolores Fritzsche, 772 Ocampo Dr., Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
William W. Healy
Funeral Mass was held March 27 at Incarnation Church in Glendale for William West Healy, 70, who died March 22.
The son of the late Tidings' columnist, Mary Healy (whose column appeared in the archdiocesan newspaper from 1939-1974), the Altadena native studied for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary in Little Rock, Ark., where he also obtained his BA. He ministered for several years at St. Jerome Church in Phoenix, then returned to California where he worked for many years at UFCW, Local 1442, and developed its Employee Assistance Program.
After leaving Local 1442, Healy continued developing programs addressing alcohol and substance abuse, assisting many locals throughout the state until retirement. He fulfilled his longtime dream of working as an usher for the Los Angeles Dodgers after retirement, until illness made it impossible to continue.
Healy is survived by three brothers, four sisters and many nieces and nephews. Interment was at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

Sr. Ellen Browne, RSHM
Funeral Mass was held March 27 at Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel in Montebello for Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Sister Ellen (St. Anne) Browne, 88, who died March 22. She was a member of her religious community for over 65 years.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, she entered the congregation in Ferrybank, Ireland, and was sent to California in 1946. She received a BA from Marymount College, an MS in education from USC and a California elementary school credential.
Sister Browne was a beloved and highly regarded teacher and principal for over 50 years. Locally, she ministered at St. Alphonsus School, Los Angeles; St. Patrick School, North Hollywood; and Visitation School, Westchester. In her active retirement years, she enjoyed clown ministry and was a volunteer in schools and convalescent centers. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
Ernest Roberts
Funeral Mass was held March 30 at St. Paul Church in Los Angeles for Ernest Roberts, 98, who died peacefully at his home March 24. Surviving family members include a son, Father Allan Roberts, pastor of St. Bernadette Church in Los Angeles.
Patrick J. McDonough
Funeral Mass was held March 30 at Our Lady of Grace in Encino for Patrick J. McDonough, 65, who died March 24.
A lifelong resident of Los Angeles, McDonough graduated from California State University, Northridge, and received his law degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles. He was a partner in the Insurance Recovery Practice of Howrey LLP in Los Angeles and over the years had served as Chair of the Institute for Corporate Counsel; Past Chair of the California State Bar Association (Insurance Law Committee); and Past Chair, Los Angeles County Bar Association (Corporate Law).
He is remembered by his colleagues as taking great joy in mentoring younger lawyers and all things Irish --- especially Notre Dame football. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan; his daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Christopher Meisel; grandsons Finn and Beckett Meisel; sisters Susan Fodrea and Sharon Searle; and brother Jim McDonough.

Sr. Eileen Malloy, CSC
Funeral Mass was held March 30 at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., for Holy Cross Sister Eileen Malloy who died March 23 at her home in Missouri.
Born in Washington, D.C., she spent 34 years in the teaching ministry with the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Locally, she taught at St. Barnabas School, Long Beach, for six years. Annie Lily Flora Alvares
Funeral services were held recently for Annie Lily Flora Alvares, former secretary at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center, who died April 5.
She had been a longtime secretary to the late San Gabriel Region Auxiliary Bishop Juan Arzube. Additionally, for a number of years she served as secretary in the archdiocesan Office of Health Affairs, when it was headed by St. Joseph of Orange Sister Jane Frances Powers and, later, by Holy Cross Sister Carolita Hart.
Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City. |
