Liturgical Commission established

text only version

The Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been reestablished in 2008, charged with advising and assisting the Office for Worship in carrying out the office's mission --- principally, "to assist the archbishop and the people of God to implement the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council within the context of the local Church of Los Angeles."

"Liturgy is the one occasion where we regularly encounter the most number of people," Cardinal Roger Mahony told Commission members at a recent quarterly meeting. "Celebrating the Eucharist is who we are as a Catholic people."

Thus, the cardinal stated --- recalling the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy's admonition that the liturgy is "summit and source" of all Church activity (CSL, n. 10) --- "Nothing we do is more important than our Sunday celebration, and it is important that we do it well, with well-planned, prayerful celebrations that bring people closer to the Lord and into the life of the Church."

The commission's membership reflects "a cross-section of the people of God" in the archdiocese, with representation from all five regions and from various institutions, ethnic and cultural groups. Four standing committees address music, initiation, environment and art, and formation and education.

Members of the commission are: St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Rosanne Belpedio (commission chair), Vincent Adams, Deacon Arturo Barragan, Frank Brownstead Sylvia DeVillers, James Drollinger, Gabriela Esparza-Reitzell, Paul Ford, Father Joel Henson, Rose Hernandez, Liliana-Hsueh-Gutierrez, Vincentian Father Kevin McCracken, Fe Musgrave, Janis Nelson, Mary Lou Vanderlip, Msgr. Thomas Welbers, Dan White and ex-officio members (Office for Worship staff) Sandra Dooley, director, and Piarist Father Manuel Sanahuja.
