Sr. Nuala Glennon, CHF, former principal

A Memorial Mass was held Sept. 12, 7 p.m., at St. John of God Church in Norwalk, for Holy Faith Sister Nuala Glennon, longtime educator in the archdiocese, who died Aug. 11 in Dublin, Ireland, following a lengthy illness.

Sister Glennon came to Southern California in 1965 and taught at St. Linus and St. John of God Schools, both in Norwalk; Cathedral Chapel School, Los Angeles; and St. Emydius School, Lynwood. From 1985-87, she was principal at Holy Spirit School in Los Angeles and, from 1997-2004, she served as principal at St. John of God School in Norwalk. During her teaching career, she also served in New Orleans at Epiphany School and St. Robert School.

Most recently, Sister Glennon served as a Pastoral Care Minister at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. According to those with whom she worked at the hospital, "Sister Nuala's gentle presence and spirituality contributed greatly to patient care." She returned to Ireland in August 2007, where she worked as co-administrator of Marian House.

Sister Nuala's siblings include Holy Faith Sisters Mary Glennon (who ministers at St. John's Seminary, Camarillo) Peggy Glennon and Dorothea Glennon.

Sr. Guadalupe Cardenas, CSC
Funeral Mass was held Aug. 6 at Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana, for Holy Cross Sister Guadalupe Cardenas, who died Aug. 3.

A native of Zinaparo Michoacan, Mexico, she began her early education at Holy Cross School and St. Catherine's Academy in Ventura. After entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, she taught for nine years in Idaho and Utah and then moved back to California where she taught for 37 years. She also ministered in Texas for 11 years.

Sr. Christine Healy, CSC
Funeral Mass was held Sept. 4 in Notre Dame, Indiana, for Holy Cross Sister Christine (M. Edwin) Healy, 86, who died Sept. 2.

Born in San Francisco, Sister Healy trained to be a teacher and taught for 23 years in elementary schools throughout the western U.S., and was principal of St. Agnes School, Los Angeles, from 1963-1970. She also served as Diocesan Superintendent of Elementary Schools for the Diocese of Fresno, and was the founder and Director of the Holy Cross Center for Women in Fresno. She remained in this work until 1999 when she came to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame.

Philip Mulavanal
Funeral services were held Sept. 6 in Chakkupallam, Kerala, India, for Philip Mulavanal, who died Aug. 31. He was the father of Father Thomas Mulavanal, serving at St. Helen Church in South Gate.

Fr. Jack Rielly, SM
Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 20 in San Jose for Marianist Father John C. (Jack) Rielly, former teacher at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, who died Sept. 14 in Cupertino, Calif. He was 83.

The San Francisco native was one of seven children two of whom (Tom and Frank) became diocesan priests, and a sister, Patricia, joined the Dominican order. He professed first vows in 1943, and was ordained in 1953.

During his career, Father Rielly served as a teacher, chaplain, novice director, recruiter, pastor, vocation director, campus minister and mentor and spiritual advisor to Lay Marianist Affiliates. In the 1950s he served for seven years as a teacher and chaplain at high schools in the former Marianist Province of the Pacific: Archbishop Riordan in San Francisco, St. Anthony in Maui, and Junipero Serra in Gardena. He served at Chaminade College (now Chaminade University) in Honolulu from 1964 to 1967.

He later was pastor of St. Anthony Church in Maui (1981-1982). In 1985 Father Rielly became a pioneer member of a Marianist community in East San Jose that worked with the poor, and for the last 15 years of his career was a spiritual advisor to Lay Marianist Affiliates on the West Coast and Hawaiian islands.

He is survived by his brother William Rielly (Irene) and three sisters: Rose Rielly Romelfanger (Charles), Mary Rielly, and Dominican Sister Patricia Rielly, and many nieces and nephews. Sr. Gerald Hartney, CSC
Funeral Mass was held Sept. 15 at Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana, for Holy Cross Sister Gerald (Maura Josephine) Hartney, who died Sept. 10.

Born in Limerick, Ireland, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1929 and taught at St. Theodore in Chicago. Skilled in accounting, she was a co-founder of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

In 2002, the American College of Health Care Executives Congress inducted Sister Hartney into the Health Care Hall of Fame for her accounting abilities and stewardship. She was general treasurer for the Congregation for 17 years and a resource person for Dioceses and religious orders.
