Funeral for Msgr. Philip Grill, pastor emeritus of St. John Eudes, set for June 18
Funeral Mass will be held June 18, 11 a.m., at St. John Eudes Church in Chatsworth for Msgr. Philip Lawrence Grill, 92, who died June 5. As founding pastor of St. John Eudes, Msgr. Grill supervised the building of the entire parish plant during his 26-year pastorate.

Born in Ogden, Utah, he moved with his family to Southern California as a preschooler and attended St. Anthony and St. Matthew Schools in Long Beach and Mary Star of the Sea School in San Pedro. He entered Los Angeles College, the former archdiocesan junior seminary, after graduation from Loyola High School in 1934.

Msgr. Grill did philosophy studies at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park followed by theology coursework at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. He was ordained by Archbishop John Cantwell in 1943 and, for 20 years after ordination, served as an associate pastor at the following parishes in sequential order: All Saints, Los Angeles; St. Cyprian, Long Beach; St. Matthew, Long Beach; and Our Lady of the Valley, Canoga Park.

In 1963, he was named pastor of a newly-established parish, St. John Eudes, in Chatsworth. His seminary classmate and good friend, Msgr. Richard Murray, pastor of neighboring St. Bernardine of Siena in Woodland Hills at the time, described Msgr. Grill as a "very good priest.

"His hallmark was his faithful service to parishioners. He was very concerned with the needs of the people in the parish," commented Msgr. Murray.

During his long pastorate of St. John Eudes, Msgr. Grill supervised the building of the entire parish plant and witnessed the growth of the parish from 800 to more than 2,500 families. A new parish hall erected after the 1994 Northridge earthquake was named in his honor by grateful parishioners.

Msgr. Grill retired in 1989 and resided at San Roque Church in Santa Barbara for nine years beginning in 1989. In 1998, he moved to St. John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles. Surviving family members include a brother, Gilbert Grill of Perris, Calif., a sister, Susan Hurd, and several nieces and nephews.

A vigil service will take place on June 17, 7 p.m., at St. John Eudes Church, located at 9901 Mason Ave., Chatsworth.

She received a chaplain certificate from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains while ministering in pastoral care ministry at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank from 1971-75.
