Archdiocesan priesthood class of '83 marks jubilee year

Eleven priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are celebrating their silver jubilees of ordination in 2008.

Seven are alumni from St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. Cardinal Timothy Manning ordained six members on June 18, 1983 at St. Vibiana's Cathedral, and one on December 3. Four were ordained in other countries and have been incardinated as priests of the archdiocese.

Several of the jubilarians have celebrated their jubilees in their respective parishes, after having recently marked the occasion with a gathering at St. John's Seminary. Following are brief profiles of the silver jubilarians.

Father George Aguilera was born in 1956 and raised in Los Angeles. He is currently pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Gardena. For 14 years he headed St. Aloysius Gonzaga parish after serving at St. John Vianney in Hacienda Heights. He is a member of St. John's 1983 class.





Father Donatus Ekenachi
was born in Nigeria in 1950 where he was ordained July 15, 1983. He is an associate pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Santa Clarita, and also served at St. Louise de Marillac, Covina. He holds a doctorate degree from USC and a master's from Loyola Marymount University.





Father Michael Grieco
is the son of founding members of St. John Fisher Church, Rancho Palos Verdes. He was born in New Jersey, 1957 and is a member of St. John's class. He has served as an associate pastor at several parishes in the archdiocese, and currently is associate pastor at Santa Clara Church, Oxnard.




Father Thomas Han
was born in Seoul, Korea, in 1958. He was ordained there Feb. 18, 1983. For several years here he has served the Korean community and is currently an associate pastor at St. Luke, Temple City.







Father George Peter Irving, III,
is a native of Syracuse, N.Y., born in 1953 and attended Sacred Heart School, Covina. He earned degrees from Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, Pomona before entering St. John's. He served 13 years as pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Wilmington, and is pastor of Holy Innocents, Long Beach





Father James Kelly
was born at George Air Force Base, Victorville in 1952. He graduated from Bishop Amat High School, and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He is also a member of St. John's class. In 2007 he was named associate pastor at Sacred Heart, Covina and previously served at Holy Angels Church, Arcadia and St. Denis, Diamond Bar.





Father Tovia Lui
was born in Samoa, 1953 and ordained August 12, 1983 and incardinated for the archdiocese in 2004. He is administrator of Sacred Heart Church, Altadena, where he was associate pastor. For several years he worked with the local Samoan community.





Father Christopher Onyenobi
was born in Imo, Nigeria, 1944 and ordained Nov. 19, 1983. He is in residence at St. Anne, Santa Monica, while pursuing studies at Loyola Marymount University. Besides English, he also speaks Spanish, Japanese, Polish and Tagalog.








Father Christopher Ponnet
was born in Temple City, 1957, where he attended St. Luke Church, then Queen of Angels Seminary High School. Ordained Dec. 3, 1983, he is active in many social justice ministries, and is pastor of St. Camillus Pastoral Care Center, Boyle Heights since 1995, where is also a chaplain at L.A. County-USC Medical Center.



Father James Stehly
was born in Tacoma, Wash. in 1955, and grew up in Fillmore attending St. Francis of Assisi Church. He is a member of St. John's class. For five years he was on the faculty at St. John's Seminary College. In 1999 he was named administrator of St. Mary Magdalen Church, Camarillo, and appointed pastor in 2000.




Father Richard Vega
was born in L.A., 1957, is a graduate of Resurrection School, East L.A., Queen of Angels Seminary High School and St. John's Seminary. He was pastor for 12 years at La Purísima Concepción, Lompoc, and was chair of the archdiocesan presbyteral council. He currently is in Chicago as president of the National Federation of Priests Councils.
