| Among the Dreamers participating in the Dreams Across America Tour is Tony Wasilewski, a Polish immigrant business owner just a few months away from becoming a citizen. Wasilewski, who lives in Chicago, had his happy life with his wife of 15 years Janina and his six-year-old son Brian come to an abrupt halt June 8 when Janina was deported and Brian, a citizen, went with her.
The Dreams Across America Film Team was with Wasilewski and his family during their last few hours together. The California Dreamers, now joined by the Tucson and San Antonio Dreamers, watched the "heartbreaking" video on the train en route to Chicago. Wasilewski joined the tour in Chicago on its way to Washington, D.C.
"I am going to Washington to tell my family's story --- to show people that a family who was always trying to live according to the law, a family that could be a great benefit to this country, is destroyed by the immigration rules and regulations," said Wasilewski. "I want the people of this country to understand that immigration law needs to be changed, and it has to happen now. My wife and son call me from Poland now. Brian asks me all the time when he can come back home. How can I tell him that he can come back, but his mom cannot?" The Dreams Across America Tour invites supporters to participate in the awareness effort by writing their family's immigration story at www.dreamsacrossamericaonline.org. |
